Sunny 4th
This was my 19th Independence Day in Port Townsend and the first one that truly felt like summer. On 16 of the holidays it’s rained. One had gale force winds. A couple were mostly dry but cool. This year the Fourth was the kind of day most of the country would expect.
Daytime highs hit somewhere in the 80s. My mother laughs when I tell her that we’re suffering from a heat wave. As an Arizona resident she would see our temperatures as reasonable. But we’re hitting highs around 15 degrees above normal. No matter what the absolute temperature is, if it’s that much beyond what you’re used to, it feels warm.

4th of July Fireworks over Port Townsend
That did make for a pleasant fireworks viewing. Most years we bundle up in our winter coats then wrap up in blankets. This time a fleece vest and windbreaker made the evening quite pleasant. Global climate change? Probably. We’ve also had one rain in the last 7 weeks, which I’ve never seen. Locals refer to the month of June as “Juneuary.” We don’t normally get that much precipitation in June but it is normally overcast, cool and drizzly.
I need to go out and water the garden now.
