Flight of the Great Blue Heron

I was walking in Kah Tai Lagoon Park and saw this heron flying toward me. Fortunately, I had a camera along. By the time I got the camera on and focused, the heron was directly overhead. I’m guessing that it flew over at 40-50 feet altitude.

Great photo – he has an impressive wingspan and neck and long legs are tucked into position. You were in the right place at the right time.

You mentioned that you were just starting with butterfly id’s. A good book is…Butterflies through binoculars: the East by Jeffrey Glassberg. I am new to this also, but it is a lot of fun….Michelle

I have to say that this was a lucky catch. I’ve taken literally hundreds of shots of birds in flight. Very few come out this well. This is the best flying heron I’ve gotten in over a year. And herons are common in the Port Townsend area.
