There is only one stream on the upper Quimper Peninsula that runs year round, Chimacum Creek. It is used by chum salmon for spawning and has seen quite a bit of habitat restoration. Here it flows through a tidal flat where it meets Port Townsend Bay in Irondale.
This area used to be a storage dump for logging operations. Now it is a county park.

It’s just starting to get light in the morning and these women are headed out to practice their rowing. As you would expect in a seaside town with an active population and a protected bay, it’s pretty common to see rowing sculls like this on the water.

Formerly the Magic Bus, this Kinetic Sculpture lives just down the hill from me. The crew is in training for the Great Port Townsend Bay Kinetic Sculpture Race, October 3-4.
A Kinetic sculpture race is an organized contest of human-powered amphibious all-terrain works of art. The original event, the Kinetic Grand Championship in Humboldt County, California, is also called the “Triathlon of the Art World” because art and engineering are combined with physical endurance during a three day cross country race that includes sand, mud, pavement, a bay crossing, a river crossing and major hills.

Between Water Street and the Bay, you can rent Kayaks, either by the hour or as part of a guided tour. These two paddlers are in front of the new Northwest Maritime Center.

At the end of the Wooden Boat show most of the boat owners sail, or motor out into Port Townsend Bay for a last goodbye. It’s always a good display.
