Port Townsend beach wear

Another typical May day in Port Townsend. The skies were partly cloudy and the high was about 59. As you can see, fleece is more appropriate than swim wear. It was actually a beautiful day for working outside.

Light on the Rhody

This is our native rhododendron, Rhododendron macrophyllum. The photo was taken in Fort Townsend State Park. As the actual name of the plant is a mouthful, most of us just call them rhodys. The week marks the 77th annual Rhododendron Festival, Port Townsend’s biggest Spring event.

The Pacific Rhododendron grows native on the west coast from B.C. to California. It’s the Washington state flower and the flower after which the festival was named.

After a wet April in Port Townsend, we’re supposed to see some blue skies for the next week or so. Wednesday was beautiful – to look at. With the wind chill, it felt like 48 degrees (9 degrees C). A perfect day to look out the window and enjoy the light.

The uniform

Every location has its look. Men of a certain age in Port Townsend need to wear facial hair, a beard if you can grow one, hat, sunglasses and work shirt. This is another photo from the Port Townsend Farmer’s Market.

Against plastic bags

These two women are dressed up in outfits made up of 500 plastic bags, the kind that grocery stores use. That’s 500 each. It must have been hot. Apparently, 500 is the number of plastic bags we each use up in a year.

They were out collecting petition signatures to ban the use of disposable plastic bags, probably paper bags too. I didn’t ask. They circulated around the Port Townsend Farmer’s Market last Saturday.

Thought for the day

This isn’t a great photo. It’s not even about Port Townsend, though I found this in a local parking lot. For some reason, it just hit a resonance.

Just another flower. I love these gerbera daisies. They just seem cheerful.
