Misty morning on the water
When I woke up this morning I looked out my window and saw a sky full of stars. I showered and fixed coffee and breakfast with visions of beautiful morning light running through my head. When I got out to head to my chosen location a pea soup fog had arisen to cloak the city. The best laid plans and all that.
Taking photos every day in a place like Port Townsend where the weather changes that quickly has certainly expanded my flexibility. Having ready access to boats to photograph doesn’t hurt.

Keystone - Port Townsend Ferry
The ferry for Whidbey Island is seen here passing behind the Hastings Building, downtown Post Townsend, under the typical January gray sky. If you look closely you can see that we had to borrow it from Pierce County as our old ferries were scrapped for being too old and unsafe.

Glacier Spirit tour boat.
The Glacier Spirit, run by Puget Sound Express, takes tours to the San Juan Islands and runs occasional charters to Protection Island. It’s in Point Hudson for this photo.

Heron Fishing at Night
I was lucky to even see this bird. The evening was actually darker than the photo and I was focused on taking pictures of Point Hudson, which was on the other side of the dock. Fortunately the bird stood still for the 15 seconds the exposure took.

Decorated boat at Point Hudson Marina
It seemed appropriate to feature a boat for the Port Townsend Christmas photo.

Port Townsend Waterfront from the Coleman Wharf
19 years ago, we first came to Port Townsend on the Whidbey ferry at sunset. I’ve never gotten tired of that twilight view. The Coleman Dock makes a decent substitute for the ferry view when I need a reminder.

Commercial fishing boat in for refit at the Boat Haven
Commercial fishing boats leave here in the spring and spend a season being beat up in the North Pacific around Alaska. It doesn’t take too long for them to need refitting. Here the Sea Otter sits awaiting repair in the Boat Haven.
