Small planes at Jefferson County International Airport

Small planes at Jefferson County International Airport

The title international airport sounds impressive. You’re seeing the main kind of airplane that the airport services, a single engine Cessna. All that the international name means is that it is possible to clear U.S. Customs here. With Canada only 35 miles away, we do get international traffic.

Hay Time in Chinese Gardens

Hay bales in the Chinese Gardens

Last week was sunny and warm, the perfect weather to bring local hay and straw fields to harvest point. While the obvious place to see cut fields would seem to be out Chimacum way, the Chinese Gardens in Fort Worden State Park got their cutting too.

Clamming at Old Fort Townsend

A father and his sons hit the beach at low tide for clams

We had our first heavy fog Sunday morning. I’d intended to go to Old Fort Townsend to shoot the tidal flats that extend for a couple of hundred yards from the bluff at minus tides. The fog was so thick that Port Townsend Bay wasn’t even visible.

This family also came to take advantage of the tide and bag some clams.

Jesus is Lord Sign

This sign is a main landmark on Irondale Road. The gas station has been closed for decades. Regular is listed at 34.9. While the old pumps rust, the gas station building and the sign get periodic fresh coats of paint.

Backyard Boatyard

Backyard Boatyard

A neighbor has been working on this boat in the backyard

While the Port of Port Townsend has a commercial boat/ship repair yard by the Boat Haven, there are a number of boats sitting on jacks in backyards throughout the county. Most spend years on land before they get back in the water, if they ever do. This boat looks to be in pretty good shape and receives attention. Many others simply sit and rot.

Jefferson County Library

The perfect place to be on a wet, blustery day, the library

The perfect place to be on a wet, blustery day, the library

Port Townsend Library has the highest use per capita in Washington State.  That’s a real credit to the city. However, it also means that the city library is often crowded and new books fly off the shelves. It’s often more comfortable to spend time at the Jefferson Country Library in Port Hadlock. I don’t get there that often, but when I need to go out to the county, I try to include a stop.

The two libraries share inventory, allowing us to request a book through either location or online for pickup at either.
