Getting to Seattle, or anywhere on the other side of Puget Sound, typically entails a ferry ride. This was taken on the way to Edmonds from Kingston.

Lower Elwha Dam

Lower Elhwa Dam

The lower of two dams on the Elhwa River.

This is one of two dams on the Elhwa River, which runs north into the Strait of San Juan de Fuca about 15 miles west of Port Angeles. Both dams are slated to be torn down starting next year. They are being removed as part of an ecosystem restoration.

Salt Creek in the Fog

Low tide at Salt Creek Estuary

We’ve had morning fog for nine straight days now. The first foggy morning last week I was excited. Now I have a whole pile of fog photos.

This is the estuary of Salt Creek, which lies about 20 minutes west of Port Angeles. Clallum County designated it a county park, and it’s one of our favorite campgrounds. At low tide you can walk out to a sea mount or explore tide pools. Or you can just take photos.

Firing the Canon

Double exposure of a canon firing during the Battle of Port Gamble

I was looking through my Battle of Port Gamble photos and found the double exposure I’d taken of a canon. I first took a distant shot, then ran closer to overlay a closeup of the canon being fired. The only Photoshop work done to this was the conversion to black and white.

Battle of Port Gamble

Civil War Enactment

Each year in June, the Washington Civil War Association holds an event in Port Gamble to portray different units and organizations that existed during the American Civil War. Participants stage battles in period uniform and provide commentary. They also have period authentic displays. The Association holds other reenactments, which I haven’t attended.

Their next event is on July 9-10 in Newport, Washington.

Dungeness River Bridge

Dungeness River Park Bridge

Bridge over Dungeness River at Railroad Park

Railroad Park is in Sequim (pronounced skwim), about 45 minutes west of Port Townsend. The park hosts the Dungeness River Audubon Center and is a wonderful place to unwind and watch birds and watch the water flow by. The path is part of the Olympic Discovery Trail, a multi-use/non-motorized trail that runs across much of the northern Olympic Peninsula.

Dappled light on Bloedel Reserve woodland path

Dappled light on Bloedel Reserve woodland path

Friday, May 7th was a sunny spring day. It was also National Public Gardens Day. What better occasion to visit the Bloedel Reserve on Bainbridge Island.
