A windy night stripped many of the leaves off the trees on Lawrence Street, Uptown.

These are sculls, not to be confused with skulls, which are so popular this time of year. They are very fast team rowing boats. These are stored in the new Northwest Maritime Center, in Port Townsend.

Across the road from the golf course, at the western  juncture of Discovery Bay and Cape George Roads is a small lake. It doesn’t have a name, which is a bit odd, as every other wet spot in the county does. Wild cherry trees surround the lake, glowing red in the fall. A few big-leafed maples punctuate the color with yellow.

I used to do a lot of cross country driving, both for work and pleasure. There’s a feeling of arrival when pulling into a lit gas station after driving for long stretches on the dark highway. I still get that feeling even when I’ve simply gotten up early and driven across town.

Yesterday dawned dark and wet. An hour after sunrise it hardly looked like the sun was going to make an entrance all day. Puddles filled the streets as a steady rain blanketed the morning. Then around 5 pm, when it looked like the whole day would stay gray, the clouds broke and the town glowed bright and fresh.
